BMW adverts from the '60s and '70s

Automotive advertising is a pretty subtle business these days. Manufacturers can't be seen to be encouraging dangerous driving, have far more of a sense of political correctness and have realised that appealing to some at the expense of others might not be the best idea for sales figures. These adverts are from the time when none of that was the case!

The '60s and '70s seem to have been the day of the pun, when it seemed wit alone would sell cars

The 2002 did prove to be one 'Schnell of a car' but we wouldn't put it that way...

The puns didn't just sell lowly 2002s however, the 'cream' of the BMW range received the same treatment...

And when the ad men ran out of puns, there's always good old fashioned chauvinism to fall back on...

Still, it's nothing compared to this stinger from VW...

At least BMW learnt their lesson and by the 1990s were only offending other car companies, rather than potential customers...
